Alex Roth is a talented, self-taught orphan who dreams of becoming a wizard and is accepted into the prestigious University of Generasi. However, on his eighteenth birthday, his life is upended when he is marked by prophecy as one of the kingdom's five Heroes destined to fight the ancient enemy known as the Ravener. To his dismay, he receives the "Mark of the Fool"—the weakest of the marks—which hinders his ability to cast spells and engage in combat.

Rather than accept a life of servitude, Alex rejects the divine decree and flees to the university with his sister, his childhood friend, and her cerberus, determined to find a way to master magic despite the limitations of his Mark.
